Summary

We study how AI and digital platforms change the incentives to produce and share information. Our model distinguishes gains in information processing from changes in intermediation, misinformation costs, and consumers’ ability to assess quality. These technologies can weaken the supply of reliable information and increase misinformation, making the effects of innovation depend on the surrounding institutions and regulation.
